Descriptive Essay Writing

Steps:

1. Think of an instance you want to describe. What were you doing? Why was this particular instance so important?
2. Consider what other things were happening around you. Are there any specific details that stand out in your mind?
3. Think about objects located in relation to where you were. Did your surroundings remind you of any other place in time?
4. Recall the sights, smells and tastes. Do they remind you of anything?
5. Write down what you were feeling at the time.
6. Determine what you want the reader to feel about what you are writing. What kind of words or images can convey this feeling?
7. Make sure there is enough detail in your essay to create a mental image for the reader.

Tips:

• Use all of the senses in a descriptive essay.
• Don't use wussy adjectives like "nice". Use a thesuarus and get some new and interesting words, like "effervescent."
• Focus more on specific terms than abstract terms (such as bright vs. beautiful). The definition of "beautiful" will vary from person to person, but words like "bright" will not.
